  • Stress wave propagation in coated elastic half-space due to high-speed water drop impact is studied by using the Cagniard-de Hoop method. The presence of the coating causes multiple reflection of the waves at the free surface and at the interface. The waves are expressed in terms of infinite series of rays, whose magnitudes are composed of the reflection/transmission coefficients. It is shown that a uniform pressure model, where the radius of contact area increases in proportion to the square root of the time, produces an annular strip of the high tensile stresses on the surface outside the contact area. The stresses have singularity at the Rayleigh wavefront, where their magnitude becomes infinite, whereas they decrease rapidly as depth increases. It is also shown that the location and singular behavior of the Rayleigh wavefront are determined from the pressure model and are independent of the coating thickness, except that reflected waves cause minor changes in amplitudes.
