  • In the coastal region, flow current and its stratification significantly is changed by the abrupt difference of surface temperature and surface roughness between land and sea. And energy exchange in this region is directly influenced by turbulence. In this study, a numerical model has developed for the simulation of the flow advection and diffusion near a coastal urban area having complex topography. Using this model, we simulated the flow current over Pusan coastal area with turbulent diffusion coefficients calculated by Smagorinsky method. Nesting technique with fine mesh is used in this study. The simulated wind fields are compared with observational AWS (Automatic Weather System) data observed by PMA (Pusan Meteorological Administration) and PNUAERG (Pusan National University Atmospheric Environmental Research Group). The simulated results were good agreement with observational data having high correlation coefficients. The thermal turbulent caused by the nonhomogeneous property of surface layer is the main factor for the formation and its evolution of flow current near the coastal area. Calculated turbulent diffusion coefficients was showed reasonable 1-cell structure with time and space. The Smagorinsky method was better than any other method (K-model, Yamada-Mellor 2.0 and 2.5 closure model, not present in this paper) to treat the process of turbulence near coastal area.
