  • The basic concept of the spectral method was described and the accuracy was tested. The Chebyshev transform shows high accuracy for the periodic and the non-periodic functions while the Fourier transform has high accuracy for the periodic function. The diffusion of pollutants was analyzed by the integration of the atmospheric diffusion equation using the spectral collocation method and ADI finite difference methods. The Chebyshev transform was used in x direction but the Fourier transform was applied in z direction. It was found that the result obtained by spectral collocation method was more accurate than that by ADI finite difference methods. In order to apply spectral collocation method to the atmospheric diffusion equation in the complex terrain, the <TEX>$$z^*$$</TEX>-coordinate was useful to avoid numerical instability.
