  • A new fast digital distance relaying algorithm which does not restrict on the sampling frequency is presented. To extract power frequency components, orthogonal function sets called block pulse functions are used. The impedance, from the relay location to the fault point of transmission lines, is estimated by these extracted components. Using only half a cycle sample data passed newly developed dc-offset removing filter reduces the relay operating time dramatically. The proposed algorithm is computationally simple and flexible. The method is tested using EMTP output signals for a 154KV transmission system, and the results are compared with those of an algorithm based on Haar function. (rdf:langString) (en)
