  • This paper describes a method to improve the speed of a distance relay based on a differential equation of transmission lines on an EHV system using feedforward artificial neural networks (FANN). The differential equation based distance relay requires a lowpass filter rejecting effectively high frequency components causing time delay of the required components. As the impedances do not converge directly to the fault distance even though data window is filled with fault data, the operation of the relay is delayed. Faults with the same fault inception angle have similar impedance loci according to the fault distance. If an ANN is trained with the convergence characteristics, it can predict the fault distance with some calculated resistances and reactances not converged to the fault distance. Thus, the proposed method can improve the speed of distance relays without unduly effecting the accuracy of the relay, and significantly if a high sampling rate is employed. (rdf:langString) (en)
