  • Various transformers are used at power transmission and distribution systems to supply electric powers stably to consumers. It is very important to install high performance protective relays to protect transformers. The ordinary method of protecting a electrical power transformer is a percentage current differential relaying. How to distinguish the operation area from the restraint area is one of the most important point determining the performance of a relay. According to development of protective relaying techniques, analog relays are substituted with digital relays. Although protective relays operate well, the setting method of a relay has not been supported with a clear theoretical basis and study. In this paper the setting methodologies used in ABB's, CE's and SEL's relays is analyzed to develop a better method to determine the operational area of a percentage current differential relay for a three-winding transformer. The model three-winding transformer is simulated with EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program). The aim of this paper is to propose the setting ways for the operational area of a percentage current differential relay for transformers considering the effect of CT saturation and CT mismatch.
